Materials: Part 1
CUSTOMER - SUPPLIED
As a project begins, customers
may supply their own material.
Rarely if ever are such materials:
placement-ready. An alteration,
( or two ), is typically required for
a customer's supplied materials,
which take some time to correct.
Certain sets of supplied materials
need more attention than others.
Alterations might include but are
not limited to: cropping, resizing,
rotating and other types of work.

FCM - SUPPLIED
Some customers have few, if any,
materials for their website project.
In such cases, images are taken of
the storefront, the interiors, aisles,
products and the customer areas.
These images taken are raw files
transmitted to: FCM's email box.
The file attachments are opened,
downloaded and then saved into
folders for reference during edits.

3RD PARTY - SOURCED
Frequently, for dramatic effect,
complementary materials may
be sourced from any number of
royalty free materials suppliers.
Video clips, images, even music
brings these 'web pages' to life.
Unique motions, bright colors;
breath-taking, panoramic views
and pleasing sounds are likely to
sooth the senses during the visit,
added value included in the cost.

Where are materials sourced?
Any supplier of materials that
are royalty free; that's the key.
Not much unlike shopping for
the right thing, whatever it is,
the process takes some time.
Rarely, if ever, is there a single
supplier capable of providing
all the materials. Shop around.
A designer must sort through
'bales ' of royalty-free, images.
Most of these images are not
relevant for your web design.
It requires attention to detail,
some degree of patience and
a richly rewarded persistence.
There are times when you do
find ideal images in minutes.
But it is a happy coincidence.
Typically, it takes grunt work
to locate compelling images.
The few suitable images that
are located must be cropped,
resized, rotated and uploaded.
Mistakes are made frequently.
Flawed materials are removed
and replaced with corrections.

PURPOSE OF TASK
The types of images selected
are singled out for a purpose.
That purpose, if it isn't obvious,
is building unique, compelling,
thought provoking, web pages.

TASK PROCESSES
Selecting the right materials
is not a single task performed
during a sitting. It's in phases.
During the workday, we spend
an hour here and an hour there
selecting images one at a time.
After successfully completing a
task like this one, what you have
are a collection of raw materials
not much unlike 'puzzle pieces'.
Web page layouts begin after
assembled pieces have been
selected, cropped and resized.

about royalties:
Some web design projects
with sizeable budgets may
allow project managers to
buy professional materials
requiring royalty payments.
Most web design projects
with limited budgets may
not allow such purchases.
The royalty-free materials
may present an alternative
that reduces project costs .
